Making The Case For Energy Efficient Code

The current state of measuring the environmental impact of our IT infrastructure is missing a big piece of the puzzle. One of the metrics we use, power usage effectiveness (PUE), only looks at how much power entering a data center is being consumed by the computer hardware in relation to the total amount of energy the facility uses. But what about the millions of lines of code running on that hardware? How can we know if that’s energy efficient code? Recently, our own John Chang spoke with Adam Lesser of Gigaom Research about how CAST’s new Green IT Index is giving CIOs all new ways to measure the environmental impact of their software based on already existing standards of quality and robustness. You can read the full article here. Though I think Lesser summed it up exactly why the Green IT Index is important for the industry in his closing thoughts: “As we try to move beyond power usage effectiveness (PUE) as the sole data center metric, analyzing code could become part of the new wave of green IT. […] The next evolutionary step is a compute per energy unit metric that takes us beyond PUE. Grading the efficiency of software is one step along that path.” You can find more coverage of the CAST Green IT Index on Data Center Dynamics, and Engineering & Technology Magazine. How are you driving green IT and energy efficient code in your organization?
